How was the Lonar lake formed?
One day a gigantic meteorite fell towards the earth. It was fast and furious. It hit the earth at a speed of 90,000 km per hour. That high energy impact shook the earth and made an enormous crater. It also flicked a few pieces and created smaller craters around it. Over many years the water streams and rainwater filled this deep crater and formed into a lake. Ever since this lake has been a religious and scientific attraction. The folklore is that there was a demon named Lonasur after whom this place was named “Lonar”.

You will find a lot of lightweight rocks in and around the lake. Some rocks float even in the water. (they are very light in weight and probably part of the meteor itself)
Due to the high pH level of the lake, there are no fishes or other aquatic life, except for algae and special microorganisms.
