How was the Lonar lake formed?

One day a gigantic meteorite fell towards the earth. It was fast and furious. It hit the earth at a speed of 90,000 km per hour. That high energy impact shook the earth and made an enormous crater. It also flicked a few pieces and created smaller craters around it. Over many years the water streams and rainwater filled this deep crater and formed into a lake. Ever since this lake has been a religious and scientific attraction. The folklore is that there was a demon named Lonasur after whom this place was named “Lonar”.

fun facts

  • You will find a lot of lightweight rocks in and around the lake. Some rocks float even in the water. (they are very light in weight and probably part of the meteor itself)

  • Due to the high pH level of the lake, there are no fishes or other aquatic life,  except for algae and special microorganisms.
