Do lions go to school?

No, they don't go to school like us, but they do learn life skills like us.

Lions can’t order food when they feel hungry. They are carnivorous animals and live by killing and eating other animals. So, the lion cubs have to go through tough, structured lessons, to learn hunting skills. If they don’t, they won’t survive in the wild. The lioness becomes the teacher and makes sure that her cubs learn how to catch and kill prey.

At first, she brings back the dead prey for her cubs so that they can learn to eat meat. Then, when the cubs grow a little older, she brings back home the wounded prey. The lioness wants the cubs to practise their killing skills on it. When they are old enough, she takes them out with her, to show them how to chase and knockdown prey.

fun facts

  • The male cubs learn fast, as they have to leave their family by the age of 2 or 3.

  • The female cubs become expert hunters when they are around 4-year-old.
